From Zero Hedge

Let’s face it: with the Iranian invasion foreplay having gone on about 3 years too long, everyone is just waiting for the flashing red “GDP boosting” headline. But to know how close we are to I-day, there is one question needing an answer: where are the boats? Below we share the latest weekly update of US naval positioning, as usual courtesy of Stratfor. The chart is self explanatory: the 5th Fleet AOR is getting just a little too crowded.

FLASHBACK ~ DB VIDEO REPLAY: Rep Grayson Grills the Fed’s Ms. Coleman Over Missing Trillions

From The Daily Bell

Thursday, November 10, 2011 – by Rep. Alan Grayson

Way back in May 2009, we posted this video of (then) Congressman Alan Grayson questioning Elizabeth Coleman, the Fed’s “inspector general” – whatever that means – over trillions that the Fed could not seem to account for. Today, Grayson is gone from Capitol Hill but his video legacy lingers …

Now we’re reposting it as an accompaniment to one of today’s stories, entitledBernanke Mulls Military Protection for Embattled Fed?” We mentioned Grayson in the story and we decided we might as well repost what we consider the video that may, in retrospect, be the one of the most important in helping end the modern Fed.

It is in our view one of the most miserable performances by a top bureaucrat ever presented on YouTube. It is truly historical in its incompetence. And in fact, it shows how much contempt Fed top guns had for the American public – that they could send this person to Capitol Hill to represent the majesty of America’s mightiest bank!

Since that time, the Fed’s brain-trust has obviously had a “rethink.” Bernanke, ever more frantically peripatetic, is now the publicist-in-chief. No, they are not so arrogant anymore. The Internet Reformation has begun to bite.

In fact, in our humble view, they are likely desperate men. If the true litany of what they have done over the past decades ever gets out, the damage will probably be impossible to contain. It would mean big, big changes. Who knows, we might even get a free monetary market out of it once again. People will be so disgusted …

Of course, there was a REASON for Ms. Coleman’s evasion, as it turned out. She and the Fed’s top men simply didn’t want to admit they’d gone and printed US$16 trillion in SHORT TERM LOANS (so they maintain today) for their buddies in America and colleagues in Europe. All this to “save” the current economic system, which CANNOT be saved anyway. (Something else is intended to take its place.)

Anyway, the previous version was entitled, “Is Anyone Minding the Store at the Federal Reserve?” Here it is once again for your viewing pleasure …

‘International week against the Apartheid Wall’ seeks to rally the ‘global 99%’

From  Mondoweiss

On October 25th at Oakland City Hall, barricades and riot police had replaced the hundreds of committed activists who had inhabited Oscar Grant Plaza since Occupy Oakland began. Helicopters swarmed above. The atmosphere was tense and thick with teargas. Earlier that day, Scott Olsen, a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War, had been shot in the head with a tear gas canister and hospitalized.

Oakland native Tristan Anderson met a similar fate in 2009 when the Israeli military shot him in the head with a U.S.-made high-velocity tear gas canister while he nonviolently protested Israel’s Apartheid Wall in the West Bank village of Ni’lin. Bassem Abu Rahmah was fatally wounded the following year when the Israeli army fired a tear gas canister at his chest as he protested the wall in the West Bank village of Bil’in. His sister Jawaher died in January after inhaling U.S.-made tear gas, which the Israeli military fired aggressively during a protest against the wall, which still annexes huge swaths of Bil’in’s land.

The connections between the struggles of Palestinians and the #Occupy movement are unmistakable: the spotlight on privilege and inequality, the mass imprisonment, the police repression, and the people’s steadfastness. As the Palestinian Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions National Committee (BNC) wrote in a statement of unitywith the “global 99%”:

Our aspirations overlap; our struggles converge. Our oppressors, whether greedy corporations or military occupations, are united in profiting from wars, pillage, environmental destruction, repression and impoverishment. We must unite in our common quest for freedoms, equal rights, social and economic justice, environmental sanity, and world peace.

The 9th Annual International Week against the Apartheid Wall is November 9 – 16, 2011. What will you do to nonviolently bring down systems of oppression both here at home and in support of Palestinians struggling to bring down the Apartheid Wall?

The Palestinian Grassroots Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign is calling on people around the world to “Stand with the Palestinian popular resistance” and pressure our “governments, institutions and corporations to stop their support of Israeli apartheid” by organizing in four key areas. Below are ideas and resources for you to take action in your community.

Awareness-raising campaigns about the Wall and settlements

Action idea: Construct a “mock wall” on your campus, at your local city occupation, or elsewhere to educate passersby about the effects of Israel’s Apartheid Wall and the connections between oppression of Palestinians and racist border practices targeting immigrants in the United States. Click here to see the new Mock Wall Campaign Toolkit created by students at the University of Arizona and Brown University.

Awareness-raising campaigns on Israel’s repression of Palestinian popular resistance

Action idea: On November 15th, activists from the March 15th Palestinian Youth Movement will attempt to board segregated Jewish-only settler buses bound for Jerusalem as an act of civil disobedience. Worldwide activists are mobilizing to shine a light on Israel’s repressive tactics and show solidarity for Palestinian popular resistance. Click here to sign up for information and a toolkit developed by coalition member group Jewish Voice for Peace to help local groups put together unique and exciting local actions in solidarity with the Palestinian Freedom Riders on November 15th.

Boycott and divestment campaigns against companies building the Apartheid Wall

Action idea: Hold a teach-in about boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) at your nearest city occupation, spotlighting Elbit Systems, an Israeli weapons manufacturer, which produces the surveillance equipment and unmanned vehicles that monitor both the Israeli Apartheid Wall and the U.S./Mexico border. Click here to download member group Grassroots International’s fact sheet about Elbit’s involvement in Israel’s oppressive policies targeting Palestinians and racist practices on the U.S.-Mexico border. Get TIAA-CREF to divest from Elbit and other corporations profiting from Israeli occupation by joining the growing “We Divest” Campaign.

To help build your case for local BDS campaigns, check out our BDS FAQs here.

Consider also distributing the BNC’s moving statement of solidarity with the #Occupy movement. Click here to download the two-page handout.

Support the Palestinian call for a comprehensive and mandatory military embargo on Israel

Action Idea: Join our organizing campaign to end military aid to Israel by signing up to receive an organizing packet in the mail with fliers, fact sheets, postcards, and petitions. With this packet, you’ll have everything you’ll need to educate and organize people at your local #Occupy or other community event to end $30 billion in tax-payer funded weapons to Israel and redirect that money to unmet needs here at home.

Please email your planned events and actions to Mallory at Stop the Wall mallory@stopthewall.org. You can also read the call to action and find excellent resources on the Apartheid Wall here.

The night after Scott was shot, thousands of activists reclaimed Oakland’s public spaces for “the 99%” by breaking down the fences with which the city government had encircled the plaza, as Palestinians continue to struggle to tear down Israel’s Apartheid Wall to reclaim their land and destinies.

As we struggle for justice here at home, let us remember that everyday Palestinians struggling under occupation are part of “the 99%.” Join the International Week against the Apartheid Wall!

Busine$$ must be slow for the ADL as they seem to have much too much time on their hands lately. Rather than search for any real problems that are facing the nation, they are once again trolling and polling the population looking for signs of anti Semitism, all with the continuing attempt to discredit movements such as #Occupy Wall Street.

A lead in to their latest ‘findings’ appeared in the press a few weeks ago;

ADL: Stop anti-Semitic calls during Occupy Wall Street rallies

Anti-Defamation League urges organizers of protest movement to condemn signs, comments blaming Jews for economic crisis in America

The full Ynet report can be read HERE

The following video shows what their ‘findings’ are based on …. rather than poll thousands of participants, they seek out those with anti zionist sentiments, or focus in on the odd nutcase who is very likely a plant of the ADL itself. They then conclude that O W S is an anti Semitic movement…. the fact that hundreds of Jews are a part of the movement seems meaningless to them…

The ADL’s latest poll troll is dealt with in THIS report…

ADL poll: Anti-Semitic attitudes on rise in America

Nationwide survey of the American people released Anti-Defamation League reveals that anti-Semitic attitudes have risen slightly in America

WASHINGTON – A nationwide survey of the American people released Thursday by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) found that anti-Semitic attitudes have risen slightly in America, demonstrating once again that “anti-Semitic beliefs continue to hold a vice grip” on a small but not insubstantial segment of America.

The ADL survey found that 15 percent of Americans – nearly 35 million adults – hold deeply anti-Semitic views, an increase of 3 percent from a similar poll conducted in 2009, and matching the levels of anti-Semitic propensities recorded in the US in 2005 and 2007. Over the last decade, the highest level of anti-Semitic attitudes was reported in 2002, when an ADL poll found 17 percent of Americans harbored anti-Jewish attitudes.

Perhaps if Israel ended the occupation of Palestine, lifted the siege on Gaza, stopped pirating ships carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, stopped the daily murder of innocent civilians, stopped building illegal settlements on stolen Palestinian lands, stopped the illegal evictions and home demolitions of Palestinians, I can go on for ten pages ….

…. Attitudes towards Israel might change and the real anti Semitic groups such as the ADL can crawl back under the rocks they emerged from.

Big Banks Plead with Customers Not to Move Their Money

From Washington’s Blog

Yes, The Big Banks DO Care If We Move Our Money

650,000 customers moved $4.5 billion dollars out of the big banks and into smaller banks and credit unions in the last month.

But there is a myth making the rounds that the big banks don’t really care if we move our money. For example, one line of reasoning is that no matter how many people move their money, the Fed and Treasury will just bail out the giants again.

But many anecdotes show that the too big to fails do, in fact, care.

Initially, of course, if the big banks really didn’t care, they wouldn’t have prevented protesters from closing their accounts.

NBC notes that – in response to inquiries regarding how many people have moved their money – Bank of America refused to provide figures, and instead sent the following defensive email:

“Bank of America continues to be a great place for customers to manage their everyday finances and achieve their savings goals,” [Colleen Haggerty, a spokeswoman for Bank of America’s Southern California operations] said in an email. “We offer customers more choice and convenience, including industry-leading fraud protection, access to thousands of banking centers and ATMs, and the best online and mobile banking, which allow customers to bank on their terms 24/7.”

A writer noted at Daily Kos:

At Wells Fargo, my sister walked up to the teller and politely asked to close her account. The teller said, “No problem.” She pulled up her account and saw the balance and told her that due to the amount she had to speak with the branch manager. The branch manager came out. He was probably 30 years old and was very arrogant. He asked my sister why she wanted to close her account and my sister told him she thought Wells Fargo was part of the problem with the economy. He went thru some talking points about why she shouldn’t move her money, but my sister didn’t back down. When he asked her where she was going she told him that she would be banking at the North Carolina State Employees Credit Union. She isn’t a state employee, but anyone can join if you are related to a state employee. It turns out her husband is. Anyway, the bankster told her “You’ll be back. Credit unions can’t provide the services you need.” We’ll see about that. She withdrew over $200k from Wells Fargo.

Next we went to Bank of America. I closed my last account with hardly any questions asked. Of course, I had taken most of my money out so there wasn’t much left to take. My sister on the other hand had a large balance in multiple accounts. They actually refused to cut her a check for the full amounts. They only gave her 1/3 of her money and told her she’d have to come back to withdraw the rest. They claimed they were only allowed to make checks for a certain amount, and that they had no authority to cut additional checks on the same day. Stupid BofA. She had her check in hand and politely told off the branch manager when he told her she had to come back another day or two to withdraw the rest.

At BofA, we weren’t the only ones closing accounts. There was a line of people. Most had small accounts because they weren’t even being challenged, but she actually had to wait in line to speak with a branch manager.

At SunTrust, the branch manager went off his rocker. He just kept asking her “is there anything I can do or anything I can say to change your mind?” He asked probably twenty times. He even offered to have the market executive meet with her and hear out her concerns. She told him she wasn’t interested. He really looked nervous about it.

And a writer at Daily Bail pointed out:

I went in, asked to speak with a banker and was seated in an office. When the young associate came in and asked the purpose of my visit, I handed her my ATM card and requested that she tell me the balance. When she did, I then asked for a cashiers check in that amount. That’s when things got wonky. She froze, stumbled over her words and asked why I needed that amount (It was not a small sum). This gave me an opportunity to explain that although I personally would not be affected by their new fees I know plenty of friends and family that would feel the pain. In solidarity with them, I wished to close the account and move on. She unwittingly suggested that if I just use my debit card once a month then there would be no fee. That was good for a belly laugh from me, then I again requested the balance to be issued to me in the form of a cashier’s check. She then told me that there would be a $10 fee for this service. Another laugh. I guess it didn’t sink in when I told her that I was fee adverse. There was an easy work-around anyway – I requested the cash. That finished my time with this associate banker as the amount I was requesting was “well past” her daily limit for withdrawals. I asked if there would be an issue with securing the cash and she said “I honestly don’t know if we have that here” and walked out to get the branch manager.

The manager was pleasant enough and very direct. After introducing herself she flat out asked “What can we do to change your mind?” “We don’t want to see you go” she emphasized. This opened a door for me to further explain my decision to leave the bank and why I was doing it. Amazingly, it did not fall on deaf ears. She indicated that understood where I was coming from and actually showed genuine surprise at some of the facts I provided her about the less than consumer friendly policies and machinations of her employer. She did make some feeble counter-arguments and repeatedly asked me if I would change my mind (with a hint of desperation!). I stood firm and by the end of our conversation she asked if I would be willing to put it all in writing so she could send it up the chain.

She shared that management is nervous, they are seeing money leaking out of the bank and realize that they have made mistakes…. They are also aware of the growing momentum behind the November 5th move your money movement.

Management is aware that people are angry (how could they not be!) and have put an ear to the ground.

Hundreds of similar stories are being told all over America.

Even though the government may keep throwing money at the dinosaurs, the Basel regulations do have some capital requirements, and so the big banks need to bring in some actual deposits to fund their casino gambling.

Moreover, if too many depositors leave, the illusion that the big banks are serving the American public will be burst, and a critical mass of consciousness will occur, so that the banks’ unquestioned control over the American political and financial systems will start to be questioned.

So moving our money is an effective step towards reclaiming America.

NEWS ALERT: Israelis Prevent Irish Activists From Boarding Flight Home

From Sabbah Report

Because silence is complicity !

by SR EDITOR on NOVEMBER 10, 2011

The seven Irish human rights activists due home in Ireland this afternoon at 2:25 pm were at the last minute prevented from boarding their flight out of Ben Gurion airport by Israeli armed guards. They had been taken last night to a holding cell and were ready to board their 7:40 am flight to London this morning when at the last minute they were prevented from doing so by Israeli security forces and returned to Givon prison. All seven are now being detained indefinitely, with no further news available from Israeli authorities or the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs about when they will be released.

Freedom Waves for Gaza; New Flotilla to GazaAn Irish Ship to Gaza shore team coordinator spoke briefly on the phone with Fintan Lane before communication was abruptly cut off. Lane said: “This is a deliberate and calculated attempt by the Israelis to break our spirit. It won’t succeed.”

Lane also reported that the seven had been subject to “continuous harassment and repeated, humiliating body searches” and were shackled and “denied sleep”.

Gay Lawlor, Zoe Lawlor’s brother, spoke briefly with Zoe, who described what was happening as “sheer malice” on the part of the Israelis.

The families of the detainees are phoning member of the Irish Ship to Gaza shore team this morning in great distress.

Laurence Davis, Irish Ship to Gaza spokesperson, commented: “We are outraged by this latest attempt by the Israeli authorities to break the morale of the human rights activists, their families and their supporters, all of whom had been looking forward to the homecoming this afternoon in Dublin. This is yet another example of the cruelty and arrogance that the Palestinians face every day.”

Irish Ship to Gaza spokesperson Claudia Saba added: “It is particularly distressing for the families to learn that their loved ones won’t be coming home as they had expected, and distressing that they have no update as to what exactly is happening or when they will be finally freed.”

Obama faces Jewish backlash over private insults about Israeli PM caught on open mic exchange with Sarkozy

It was the private conversation heard ’round the world, and some U.S. lawmakers are stepping up to scold Barack Obama over his choice of words as he cozied up to Nicolas Sarkozy last week.

The president and his French counterpart were caught taking a jab at Benjamin Netanyahu during the G20 Summit last week in Cannes as the two thought their microphones we off.

Nicolas Sarkozy branded the Israeli prime minister ‘a liar’ while Obama retorted:  ‘You’re fed up with him – I have to deal with him every day!’

On Tuesday, several U.S. lawmakers chided the president, saying his undignified comments couldn’t have come at a worse time.

Rep Bob Turner, who took over the predominantly Jewish New York district vacated by Anthony Weiner, warned that Obama’s comments could be ‘dangerously misconstrued.’

Speaking with Politico, Rep Turner said: ‘These are dangerous times in the Mideast, and we cannot allow Israel’s enemies to believe there is a crack of light between our relationship. This is the time to make clear that America stands resolutely beside her ally.’

Congresswoman and 2012 GOP presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann demanded that the president apologize for his remarks.

She said: ‘I call on President Obama to immediately apologize to Prime Minister Netanyahu and I also believe that the president should demonstrate leadership and demand that the French President Sarkozy do the same.’

Israeli politician Danny Danon said that President Obama revealed his feelings toward Israel with the remarks to Sarkozy.

Mr Danon told the Jerusalem Post: ‘Obama’s true face was revealed, as are his cold and disrespectful policies toward Israel and Prime Minister Netanyahu.’

He added: ‘Anyone who had doubts about the way Obama treats Israel doesn’t have them anymore. Obama is bad for Israel.’

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney had no comment this afternoon.

The fateful conversation began with Obama chiding Sarkozy for not telling him that France would vote to admit the Palestinians into the UN body UNESCO – a step the U.S. opposes.

From there, the two men began discussing the Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu in an exchange which has now been published on French news website Arret Sur Images.

Mr Sarkozy is then overheard saying: ‘I cannot stand him. He is a liar.’

Mr. Obama is reported to have replied: ‘You’re fed up with him, but I have to deal with him every day!’

The U.S. president then urged Sarkozy to try to persuade the Palestinian Authority to step down its campaign for membership of the United Nations.

After three minutes, French officials realised the conversation was being eavesdropped and cut the microphones, Arret Sur Images said.

The journalists then agreed not to publish the overheard chat and stick to the ‘rules of conduct’ that applied to covering the summit – but one reporter later leaked the details to the website.

But while the outburst – which was heard by six French journalists wearing headsets – is humiliating for French summit host, it could lead to serious difficulties for the Americans.

Politically, the gaffe with Sarkozy also represents a crushing blow to Obama’s attempts to court the crucial Jewish vote ahead of next year’s U.S. election.

Obama and Sarkozy made for a very congenial pair at Cannes, with lots of handshakes and backslapping.

In fact, the U.S. President felt so comfortable in the presence of dimunitive Sarkozy that he cracked a joke at the Frenchman’s expense over the birth of his new daughter Giulia with his supermodel wife Carla Bruni.

‘I’m confident that Giulia inherited her mother’s looks, rather than her father’s,’ he said.

Both the White House and Elysee Palace have refused to confirm or deny that the exchange took place.

Child's play: President Barack Obama visits a classroom at Yeadon Regional Head Start Center in Yeadon, Pennsylvania today

Child’s play: President Barack Obama seemed oblivious to the breaking scandal visits a classroom at Yeadon Regional Head Start Center in Yeadon, Pennsylvania yesterday

Meanwhile Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad today stepped up the war of words over the International Atomic Energy Agency’s report which is due to be published today.

France, China and Russia have urged the U.S. and Israel not to take military action despite fears Iran could be ‘nuclear ready’ in a matter of months.

The agency report is expected to claim that Iran has continued working on its progamme since 2003 – with the help of rogue scientists from Russia and Pakistan – while the world thought it had halted its scheme.

The report will also suggest that Iran made computer models of a nuclear warhead and include satellite imagery of what the IAEA believes is a large steel container used for nuclear arms-related high explosives tests.

New UN evidence suggesting Iran was helped by several foreign scientists could provide further headache for Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

UN evidence suggesting Iran was helped by foreign scientists could provide further headache for President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

Ahmadinejad today criticised the head of the UN’s nuclear agency as an American pawn.

He said his country’s nuclear budget was roughly $270m a year, in a rare official declaration of a monetary figure.

He said that Iran will not withdraw from its controversial nuclear activities, which Tehran insists are not geared toward weapons production.

The UN Security Council hopes that they will suspend nuclear enrichment and start negotiations on its nuclear programme – which it refuses to do.

In remarks broadcast on state television Ahmadinejad said that IAEA chief Yukiya Amano was simply repeating U.S. allegations.

‘He delivers the papers that American officials hand on him,’ Ahmadinejad said.

‘I am sorry that a person is heading the agency who has no power by himself and violates the agency’s regulations, too,’ the Iranian president said.

President Obama’s disparaging comments about the Israeli PM are unlikely to help his attempts to win over the Jewish vote in the run-up to next year’s election.

The President has been dogged by accusations that he is anti-Israeli and the criticism has been blamed by some for the Democrats’ most recent electoral losses.

Earlier this year Bob Turner became the first Republican to win the two-fifths Jewish district of New York City following the resignation of disgraced congressman Anthony Weiner.

And a recent poll showed a dramatic fall in Obama’s approval rating among Jewish Americans, down from 68 per cent in May to 54 per cent in September.

He again reiterated Iran’s claim that it is not involved in making a nuclear weapon.

‘They should know that if we want to remove the hand of the U.S. from the world, we do not need bombs and hardware. We work based on thoughts, culture and logic,’ he said.

Ahmadinejad said the U.S has recently added $81bn to its current budget on nuclear weapons, some 300 times the entire Iranian budget.

U.S. officials say the government will use the IAEA report as leverage in making its case to other countries that sanctions should be expanded and tightened and that the enforcement of those sanctions should be toughened.

Israel has also reiterated in the run-up to the report’s release that it may at some point conduct a military strike.

Israeli defence minister Ehud Barak told Israel Radio today that he is sceptical the international community would impose crippling sanctions on Iran after the report’s release, and that Israel will continue to recommend that no option be taken off the table.

In an apparent answer to Barak, Iran’s defence minister General Ahmad Vahidi said Iran would strongly respond to any strike.

‘Any adventurous and hostile act against Iran will face a strong, swift and stern response by the Iranian armed forces,’ Gen Vahidi told IRNA news agency.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said today that while Beijing is firmly opposed to any use of force, ‘the Iranian side should also show flexibility and sincerity.’

China is Iran’s biggest trading partner but has supported previous UN sanctions related to Iran’s nuclear programme.
